Public Beaches

The beach at Marina di Castagneto
Here, the sand is fine but is lighter or darker in colour along different sections of the beach, which drops away gently from the shoreline where bathers should be aware of strong currents if the sea is rough. The part of the beach located right in front of the residential part of town is home to bathing establishments that charge for entry and services provided, but the public beaches that are free to use extend for miles to the north and south of the town. Cleaned daily, they also sport “Punti Azzuri” tourist info / services points. The Blue EU flag testifies to how clean the water is although prevailing currents mean that it is rarely clear in the summer. At the back of the beach there is a strip, about fifty metres wide, of dunes and dense pine woods. In the busy month of August, free car parking close to the sea is not easy.

Rimigliano Nature Reserve
Via della Principessa, San Vincenzo
Located between San Vincenzo and the Golfo di Baratti, it can be accessed, on foot, by following the pathways that wind through the park's holme-oak wood. There are two “Punti Azzuri” providing restaurant and bathing services for tourists. The beach and shoreline are sandy, the water calm and clear and the beach itself is about 20 metres wide and several kilometres long. Car parking and access to the area is completely free and facilities include picnic areas, toilets, showers and bars. Information: 0565 49430

Perelli and the Sterpaia Nature Reserve
Just south of Piombino, between Torre del Sale and Torre Mozza, the area can be reached by following the signs along the Piombino – Vignale Ritorto road. Both the beach and shoreline are sandy, the water is crystal clear and different stretches of beach, which is about 20 metres wide, are known by different names. Access to the area is free, but there is a charge for parking and whilst parts of the beach are public (with no charge) there are also privately managed bathing establishments too. Walking, biking and riding trails all feature. Info: 0565-49430 www.parchivaldicornia.it

Safe Summer 2008 (Marina di Castagneto Carducci)

The Safe Summer 2008 Code of Conduct stems from an unprecedented collaboration between local businesses, the town council and other public bodies with on-going support from the Marittimo di Piombino circuit offices.

It means that some 21 watch towers, manned by specifically appointed lifeguards have been set up along more than 4000 metres of both public and privately managed beach.

The overall aim of the project is intended to guarantee the safety of both local residents and tourists throughout the summer period.  Safety on the beach and in the water is the prime concern, dealt with in the general Lifesaving programme itself, but disabled access to the beach and water has also been tackled head on and is catered for at certain points of the beach.

The code of conduct also deals with the provision of medical assistance, including the organization of on-call doctors for tourists, the availability of a pediatrician,  an ambulance with on-board doctor and the regular patrolling of the beach as both a preventative and controlling measure provided by the local Municipal Police station.
