| EVENTS & FESTIVALS |
Castagneto a tavola (April) This food and wine festival in Castagneto Carducci provides the ideal opportunity to enjoy Castagneto's traditional food and of course its wine, including the Sassicaia, that enjoys world-wide appreciation. The event includes dinners in local restaurants and tasting wines produced in estates along the local Costa degli Etruschi Wine Route in wine bars and special “taste” workshops as well as guided tours of wine cellars and various cultural activities including book presentations and debates.
Livorno: Effetto Venezia (July) This “festa” features a variety of shows, theatre pieces and concerts that enliven the historic district of Livorno -, known as Venezia – for 10 days every year. It is a magical mix of voices, lights, sounds and colours that take over the district's courtyards, bridges, historic buildings and squares. This district is the most lively and oldest part of the city and it is the canals that run through it that led to it being named after that famous lagoon city in the North. During this festa period, it is overtaken by stalls displaying and selling goods, including local crafts that are set up next to the smart antique shops along the neighbourhood's main roads. It is also an opportunity to take a trip on a characteristic boat and explore the old Medici moat network and see a different and evocative view of Livorno from the water.
Sassetta: Festa d'autunno (October)
This October-time Autumn Festival in Sassetta takes place under a still hot sun whose rays embue everything with the soft red tones of Autumn. It takes place during the last three Sundays of the month and provides an opportunity to taste typical gastronomical delights of this old historic village, thanks too to particular highlights such as the “polentata”, and the soup and chestnut festivals. Other special features to enjoy keep local folklore alive - such as the historic parade, the flag throwers and the “palio dei ciuchi” around which the entire festa is choreographed. At this time of the year, there is also nothing better than a nature ramble through the chestnut groves dotted in the local Sassetta countryside.
Suvereto: La Sagra (beginning of December)
For 30 years now, the first half of December is when Suvereto celebrates by putting on a festa featuring typical local food, exhibitions, cultural activities, folklore and other shows too, creating a programme that is as rich as it is varied. As Suvereto is an old medieval village, it is only right and proper that festa sprawls out to take over the period castle, alleys, town hall, fortress, St. Francis' Cloister, town walls and watch towers, not forgetting the Romanesque Church of San Giusti too. An open fire is lit in the town centre, topped by a huge grill on which a variety of tasty meats are cooked, although wild boar, is the undoubted star of the menu as it is a favourite ingredient in many local dishes. A whole range of traditional local fare is prepared and can be enjoyed sitting out in the open air or in one of the many local restaurants taking part. |
